Yes, that's exactly how I remember what was said. Anyway, the tone seemed dismissive.

I remember him saying, "that was Nick Cave performing the beautiful and haunting, I had a dream ... Joe..." Something like that. It's been a few years.

i saw him do a very sombre version of the mercy seat on letterman once, just him on piano. letterman made a comment after that as well.

Yep. I remember it. Letterman smirked. Let's remember he's a jerk in all sorts of context. That said, Nick Cave on TV!

Love seeing Nick give an extra-passionate performance on an American TV show with a band that easily could have thrown him off, with their signature sound. Years later, Nick briefly shook hands with Letterman after performing "Love Letter" and left the stage. Letterman was bewildered and just laughed, since guests usually acknowledge the camera. For the record, Letterman pokes fun at real friends of the show. Not a big deal. If anything, it makes the guest easier for viewers to remember.

Such a bizarre version with all the keyboard and guitar wankery in the middle. Nick and Mick could've done a superior job just the two of them. I enjoyed it anyway. They tried I guess.

It's funny if that were the case, because Nick Cave went on to appear on Letterman several times since then. It seems like Letterman actually grew to admire Nick and his music. I could be wrong though.

Hey peerenboom, you're absolutely right about Letterman. I was hoping to see it on here too. He said it after the commercial break. It was something like, "And that was Nick Cave singing his song, I had a dream Joe... Okaaaay...." while looking into the camera, raising his eyebrows and acting speechless like 'you can't call that music and how the hell did this freak get on my show'. Schaffer did his usual "huh, huh, Joe, I dunno what that was, you got me" Beavis to Letterman's Butthead.

Letterman always stuck as an utter ass with a chip on his shoulder for celebrities. While having a chip on your shoulder is never ok, I can understand harboring a distaste for many of the so called (no talent) 'stars' out there today, but come on...why would you disrespect Nick Cave? So, so *very* disrespectful this Letterman loser. Doubtful I'll ever be on his show - but if and when the day does come, I'll let him know exactly what I think of the hack. Fuckin mug.

@peerenboom77 I do know though, because the night that I dave birth was the first time, after beind a fan in America since the 80's.... 04-19-01.....Letterman pretty much sucked Nicks cock..... he must have lyrically wounded Letterman w a Tongue Lashing. "Loveletter," was the song, yes, I sobbed.

@peerenboom77 : I had this on VHS tape. After the commercial break Letterman said in a very sarcastic voice "That was Nick Cave with the beautifull and haunting I HAD A DREAM JOE". The crod erupted into laughter. Was kinda funny, tongue in cheek.
