New Riders of the Purple Sage - Hello Mary Lou 1972

Original by Ricky Nelson 1961

Hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

Sweet Mary Lou, I'm so in love with you

I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part

So hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

You passed me by one sunny day

Flashed those big brown eyes my way

And oo I wanted you forever more

I'm not one that gets around

Swear my feet stuck to the ground

And though I never did meet you before

I said, hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

Sweet Mary Lou, I'm so in love with you

I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part

So hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

I saw your lips I heard your voice

Believe me I just had no choice

Wild horses couldn't make me stay away

I thought about a moonlight night

My arms about good an' tight

That's all I had to see for me to say

Hey, hey, hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

Sweet Mary Lou, I'm so in love with you

I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part

So hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

(Instrumental)

You passed me by one sunny day

Flashed those big brown eyes my way

And oo I wanted you forever more

I'm not one that gets around

Swear my feet stuck to the ground

And though I never did meet you before

I said, hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

Sweet Mary Lou, I'm so in love with you

I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part

So hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

Yeh hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

Yeh hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

NRPS at their best. RIP Marmaduke and Tolbert. Buddy is very sick. Nelson still plays and very well.

Buddy is excellent. First time I saw a video with him playing with NRPS (heard a lot, though). I'm sorta partial to the late Red Rhodes, who worked a lot with Mike Nesmith and the First National Band. Hit up "Calico Girlfriend" here on YT. He was solid as well.

Buddy Cage..unquestionably one of the greatest steel guitarists. I bought his first Emmons from him in the mid 70's. Though I never could play as well as he does he taught me so much. I hope you are well Buddy.

I saw them on the "Powerglide" tour with this song on it, and ended up backstage, then on the stage, sitting behind Buddy Cage on the pedal steel guitar, at F&M College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Dave Torbert (Bass and lead vocals on this song) along with Spencer Dryden (former drummer with Jefferson Airplane) were still alive and kickin.' I'm missing Marmaduke (John Dawson) too...

Yes!.....The Burritos were right there at the beginning of all this "country rock" stuff.
