There are a lot of interesting comments here, but one must bear in mind that Martin Hannett produced this album and, yes, it was made shortly after the loss of Ian Curtis. All subsequent [New Order] albums have their roots in and are, indeed, a steady evolution of the Hannett-Curtis sound. Movement sounds closer to the Joy Division work because it was created while Hannett was still at the controls and while Curtis' influences where still fresh. I think the band's negative references to this album -- most coming after "New Order" had found success -- come from the difficulty of creating new work during a very uncertain time. They had recently lost a brilliant singer-songwriter in a most tragic way and, let's face it, that's a hard thing to come back from. Considering the circumstances, this is particularly great work.

for a band to come back from what they went through as individuals and as a band it's impressive. too human, too quality, too real

It took the US over 15 years to appreciate Gary Numan's work, so you have a point there. They still don't recognize the true brilliance in New Order either.

my god why do you have such animosity for us, you cannot just say JD wouldn't have been well received by Americans because the tour never happened and for all you know it could've been an amazing tour

「movement」ってjoy divisionの影を感じることで評価がパッとしないけど 今聞くと「権力の美学」よりモダンに感じる。

So good. So much of New Order is the darkest, post-punk, deep disco...this whole record kicks ass.

the electro bassline reminds me of No More War by Bronski Beat from four years later

Movement is so underrated. This and all their early work is their best, especially Procession.

@charjl Probably the association with the aftermath of Curtis's death.
