Never Get to Know by Paul Baribeau on Paul Baribeau. What a great song. Lyrics: I'll never get to know my friend Steven

He thought he found an answer

He was my firend since kindergarden

And then I watched him disappear.

I'll never get to know my friend Mellisa

She had a baby when she was sixteen

And now she works in a mall in Florida

Sometimes I wonder who she could have been.

I'll never get to know my mom's friend Bonnie

She's the one who made me want to be an artist

She could paint the prettiest pictures

until both her lungs collapsed.

I'll never get to know my mom's friend Harry

He had a low scrattchy growl of a voice

He sing "make me an angel that flies from montgomery"

And then he drank himself to death

I'll never get to know my sister

Because my sister is a crack head

But thank God I remember

When she was just a little kid

I'll never get to know my dad

Because my dad lives in a dream

And even though I think he's the best

He seems so far from everything

And I'll never get to know my mom

Because my mom is an alcholic

And I bet when she was young

She never saw it coming

You might wonder why I'm an asshole

I wonder I'm so uptight

I wonder why I just don't chill out

And learn how to have a good time

But sometimes I'm scared right out of my mind

And sometimes I just get angry

Because I've been let down by the people that I love

But I will not let down the people who love me.

I think that hes saying how people change and arent who they are when theyre under the affects of a drug or are addicted and going through withdrawal. Someone I know is to the point that id say hes an alcoholic and i cant really stand to be around him just to watch him throw his life away. I remember before we ever started drinking at all and he was one of my favorite people to be around and now he drinks all the time and it has changed him. I still see him every so often but ill never know him.

Have you ever tried to properly get to know a person who has fallen to serious substance abuse? My Father has schizophrenia and early onset dementia due years of alcoholism. It's like he's just a shell of a person and you can't properly communicate with him any more. Just try and think of what the implications of the lyrics could mean before you jump the gun.

not so much his "pleasure" as much as the fact that he'll never have a relationship with these beautiful people who had their lives ruined by drugs and alcohol. he's framing others' addictions in terms of how their addictions fucked up their goddamn lives. he's sad he'll never knowthese people & he's saying "this is why i am who i am and i don't want to be this way." he's not shaming. as someone who loves people w/ addictions this is what it's like for me i dunno maybe it's diff for you.

While your view point would make good scholarly research and I'd honestly be interested to read it. I might ponder on it myself. However, I think you might be looking into it too sociologically..

I would rather get punched in the gut than listen to this song but I still listen to it.

Love it when artists I love allude to other artists I love
