The lyrics are so powerful yet very sad. It hits you right in the heart. I just realised how music can bring the feeling of empathy and how we can relate to it so much. This is one such song."It is better to burn out than to fade away. My,my,Hey,Hey"

The King is gone but he's not forgotten. This is the story of Buddy Holly. It's better to burn out than it is to rust. The King is gone but he's not forgotten.".... There's more to the picture than meets the eye...." Buddy's former producer and manager, Norman Petty, owed him a large amount of money. At the age of 22, Buddy Holly moved to N.Y.C. with his new bride, Maria Elaina, where he planned to produce his own material as well as other artists. Norman Petty withheld money belonging to Buddy due to Holly's decision to breakout on his own. Petty was indeed, very petty; especially at a time when Buddy had no desire to tour the Mid-west during the frigid winter months. Buddy and Maria Elaina were expecting their first child, which made the need for him to perform on the, "Winter Dance Party" tour, all the more miserable.... traveling on an unheated bus that routinely broke down along the way while arctic air blasted the musicians. All because Norman Petty would decide to "make Buddy Pay" for his decision to sever his ties with the producer / manager. We know what happened when 3 of the guys got the opportunity to avoid the damn bus. Roger Peterson was just 18 years old but he WAS licensed to fly. He supposedly was trained to fly via instrument flight rule, albeit history would prove otherwise. Again, there was SO MUCH MORE to the picture. And to say, "they give you this but you pay for that."..? Well, hell, yeah. Buddy's bride suffered a miscarriage shortly after losing her husband, she also grieved the loss of their only child. Buddy Holly was the supreme innovator who, at age 22, set forth on a blazing path to forge the foundation of rock and roll. Bands as we still recognize them today, would be no different than The Crickets were. Lead Guitar and lead vocals, the bass, the drummer and a rhythm guitar was optional, or a keyboard. That's it, then and now. I've always had a deep appreciation for Neil Young's exceptional talent for beautiful vocals, his prolific compositions over the decades, and his skills, often underrated instrumentally. (no, make it a, !!!) Neil's part of this song saying, "...more to the picture....", to me, is the story of WHY the 22 year old newlywed, Buddy Holly, HAD TO leave the love of his life and their unborn child to ride through frozen corn fields on an unheated bus to join a winter tour. He needed to earn the money due to his being stiffed by the producer who struck solid gold when Buddy Holly happened, period. It's better to burn out than it is to rust. But it's better to live and love than it is to burn out in a frozen Iowan cornfield in February. Norman Petty apparently chose to rust, not surprisingly. That is the imagery that this song brings to my mind's eye. Thank you, Neil, for keeping the faith, and for being a shining example of why rock and roll can never die! This for me, mirrors the tragic end of the life of Buddy Holly. Better to burn out than to Fade Away.... yes, Not Fade Away... so right, Neil!
