Neil Young performs "Homegrown" at Farm Aid II in Austin, Texas on July 4, 1986.

Neil Young is a co-founder and board member of Farm Aid, along with Willie Nelson, and John Mellencamp. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and in 1985 planned the first Farm Aid concert for American farmers. The following year, Farm Aid II was held on July 4 with performances by Alabama, The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Julio Iglesias, Waylon Jennings, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and many more.

Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

Being as it's the time of year to plant a garden, Neil Young's Homegrown seemed to be appropriate.

If American Farmers were free to grow industrial hemp they wouldn't need farm aid because of the massive profit potential. George Washington grew hemp & so did generations of farmers without a DEA permit. It doesn't contain THC. It can be used to make fabric for clothing, resins for plastics & oil for fuel.

it is about weed, always was, but when Willie Nelson asked him he helped w/Farm Aid and it took on another meaning. Neil said in a 1999 concert that it still meant the original thing, though.

...stupid question...is this about weed? I know in this context it isn't necessarily, but I always took it to be about weed.
