From Landing On Water (1986)

-------------------------------------------

HIPPIE DREAM

Take my advice

Don't listen to me

It ain't paradise

But it used to be

There was a time

When the river was wide

And the water came running down

To the rising tide

But the wooden ships

Were just a hippie dream

Just a hippie dream.

Don't bat an eye

Don't waste a word

Don't mention nothin'

That could go unheard

'Cause the tie-dye sails

Are the screamin' sheets

And the dusty trail

Leads to blood in the streets

And the wooden ships

Are a hippie dream

Capsized in excess

If you know what I mean.

Just because it's over for you

Don't mean it's over for me

It's a victory for the heart

Every time the music starts

So please don't kill the machine

Don't kill the machine

Don't kill the machine.

Another flower child goes to seed

In an ether-filled room of meat-hooks

It's so ugly

So ugly.

I always loved this LP, released in '86 as I was transforming to a corporate engineer. Don't kill the machine!

This is one of my favorite Neil records. I did not like it at first and it does take time to sink in. I advise all owners of this record to play it fairly often for a few weeks. It is a real grower but in different ways then his typical classics. It eventually hits home. So glad I got this 8 years ago. After the first listen I would have bet 1000bucks it would never mean more than being one album closer to having the Neil Young catalogue.

Saw him perform this at Great Woods in Mansfield Mass. in 1997 with Crazy Horse. The song morphed into an improvised jam that went on for another 6 or 7 minutes, it was a classic Crazy Horse jam that I was lucky enough to witness.

great tune from a criminally underrated album

Saw CSN at Pine Knob, three weeks, I saw Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Because of legal entanglements, they couldn't tour as CSNY. But it didn't matter b/c while CSN was in rare form--Crosby just got out of jail--Young was absolutely THE SHIT. And Landing on Water is a vastly overlooked entry in the annals of rock and fucking roll.

"Just because it over for you, don't mean it's over for me." What an awesome song. Neil and others of his generation carried the torch for so long; it's up to many of us to carry on the hippie dream. Neil was calling out all generations. Even at Red Rocks in 2012, he talked about plastic bottles and pollution. This awesome man will never give up. He's the best. The best. Thanks for the post.

I just worked on the Benifit Show he did in NY's Central Park on the Great Meadow last week ,It was televised , and if you were lucky enough to see it , you can see how it just reaffirmed what we've agreed to , Neil never sucks ,in fact he was so fuckin great , I had goose bumbs just being there on the job . He performed with Crazy Hoarse ,and the Phoo Fighters ,etc

This album was considered up to par for sure at the time of its release. It received substantial airplay,at least in Ny,and l personaly caught a show at The World ,a somwhat underground club on the lower east side (alphabet city) Lets just say ,to put it politely,Neil may have been a bit under the weather that particular performance,it was known to happen on occassion at his shows at hat time in history, but the greatness of the music was most definatly recognized,so Neil's music never sucked,,,
