This is back in the day where the music was the show and the performers were just there doing their thing like being in their living room. But starting in the 80's, everything changed. It used to be when the show started, the talent just walked out onto the stage, picked-up their instruments, fiddled with them a little to make sure they were still in tune, they might say a few words of introduction to the audience, and then they would begin. Today, it's all about dimming the house lights to absolutely darkness and when the lights come back on it is to thunderous music and the star(s) comes out on stage with all kinds of lights, fireworks/explosions, and begins to sing the "music."
