Let's not kid ourselves: Undeniably great as ND is, The Monkees took this song and made it their own. Still, fun to hear this bit of archival history. ND has MANY triumphs; give the much-maligned Monkees their due on this one!

It's too bad he never did an actual recording of this. As much as I love the Monkees' version I'm sure his would have been better.

Agreed, Neil is perhaps my fave singer but The Monkees really took his song to the maxim!

Finally a recording of Neil at his best. As for the person who said what a crap recording, this is what bootlegging was like back in the early 60's in a smokey night club - so get over it.

Been looking for a Neil Diamond recording of this wonderful tune that he wrote for The Monkees for years! Thanks for posting this! Please don't ask me to compare Neil Diamond and Davy Jones! I'm a HUGE Neil Diamond fan, AND a HUGE Monkees fan! I love both recordings!

Did Neil ever do a studio version of this?

Stuff and nonsense Davy Jones would have been the first to admit that he didn't hold a candle to Neil Diamond

Now I know where John Cougar Mellencamp got the inspiration for R.O.C.K. in the USA from.

@83redrose83 The Monkees were no less a real band than N'Sync, the Backstreet Boys or the Jonas Brothers and no less of artists then Whitney Houston, Britney Spears or Dusty Springfield. Neil Diamond is a great singer and a great songwriter and its wonderful to hear him sing it. He and the Monkees were a fantastic collaboration that should have lasted longer.

I will be first to admit that back in the day Neil DID have a voice, and I have plenty of the LP's to prove it. But unfortunately years of smoking have taken their toll on that Diamond voice. His singing over the past (decades?) has been reduced to gravely growls and a kind of melodic shouting of the lyrics. Each time I hear him nowadays I just cringe. Poor fellow. Poor us.

to those who aren't enthralled about this one--keep in mind the venue sound quality as it transferred to recording and one is usually partial to the song version they first identify a song with...and also-in true Neil Diamond style-- Neil is playing with it a bit live here.

@83redrose83 actually they became a real band--and quite accomplished one at that.

As much as I like the Monkees, I much prefer hearing Neil sing it. And I beg to differ with the previous poster. Neil Diamond IS both a great singer and songwriter.
