La obra representa la ciudad de Aranjuez a finales del siglo 18 y las Cortes de Carlos IV y Fernando VII. Según Rodrigo explicó en 1974: El nombre se basó en el famoso sitio real a la orilla del río Tajo, cerca de Madrid, en la carretera de Andalucía y algunos perciben la sombra de Goya en sus notas musicales, llenas de emoción melancólica.
