This particular song could be drastically improved by using a very simple trick. Just turn it off.

Very subjective. I think. it is not so universal way to improve the mix.

You and Joe Giulder have the coolest and simplest mixing tips that make a difference. Instead of boosting too much of the wrong frequency, you show us how cutting a small amount at the right frequency can do a better job and not decrease headroom. Cut, cut and cut again. Thanks so much

If you are doing this "every time" then you need to start making these adjustments in on individual tracks that could benefit from it. That high end boost could add sibilance or expose noise too - not good for your mix. Also, that 500Hz issue sounds could be the quality of your preamps. That is where the mushy build up comes from on cheap pres.

What do you mean mix buss? The master fader?

You used EQ to make your mix brighter, i don't see what part of this is a trick. Maybe to a complete novice this would be something substantial. Your drums are already too bright and your "Trick" makes them even worse.

i used this in a mastering session. nice trick!!!

This will help give the mix a more polished sound. If you want more organic, stick to only EQing individual tracks. That's the bottom line.

Well I agree with posters about cutting the infamous "oh-zone" around 300-500 Hz. Usually you already take care of this in the individual channels, with the right amount of EQ for each instrument/channel to avoid building up this boomy, muddy, unpleasant low-mid range. Regarding adding treble: I usually go easy on that to avoid an overly brilliant sound. The final "shine" (=treble boost) should be left for the mastering stage. Anyway: I agree: the Waves SSL EQ is great. Nice for adding some sweet mid range (around 1-2 kHz but staying away from the annoying 3 kHz) to vocals (for ex.).

When I watched this last week I wasn't convinced of the 8kHz shelf. But I tried it on a mix I'm fighting that was muddy, and it worked well. Along with the usual ~500Hz and 100Hz cuts it really added some clarity to my mix.

Come on, people watching and listening to this must see the bigger picture . Stock plugins, 500 this or that is irrelevant. This comment is not meant to be rude or disrespectful but the song is terrible. That is the only important thing . Start with a good piece of music , then the rest that follows has meaning and an importance. Frank

Graham, you do an amazing job of getting us novice guys up and running, thank you so much for passing on your knowledge!I have a quick question for you, I use logic pro 9 and other than the master output, do you know the process to put this eq and the "reverb glue" you mention in your other video on the mix bus. The master output may be the same thing, I'm just really starting to use bussing for the first time after watching your videos.
