"(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover" is a popular World War II song made famous by Vera Lynn with her 1942 recording - one of her best known recordings. Written in 1941 by Walter Kent and Nat Burton, the song was also among the most popular second World War tunes. It was written before America had joined the war, to uplift the spirits of the Allies at a time when Nazi Germany had conquered much of Europe's area and was bombing Britain.

The song was written at a time when British and German aircraft had been fighting over the cliffs of Dover in the Battle of Britain the song's lyrics looked toward a time when the war would be over and peace would rule over the iconic White Cliffs of Dover, Britain's de facto border with the European mainland.

Vera Lynn was born in 1917. She is an English singer and actress whose musical recordings and performances were enormously popular during World War II.

During the war she toured Egypt, India and Burma giving outdoor concerts for the troops. She was called "The Forces' Sweetheart"; the songs most associated with her are We'll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover. She remained popular after the war, appearing on radio and television in the UK and the United States.

The White Cliffs of Dover are cliffs which form part of the British coastline facing the Strait of Dover and France. The cliffs are part of the North Downs formation. The cliff face, which reaches up to 107 metres (351 ft), owes its striking façade to its composition of chalk (pure white calcium carbonate) accentuated by streaks of black flint. The cliffs spread east and west from the town of Dover in the county of Kent, an ancient and still important English port.

Shakespeare Cliff marks the point where Great Britain most closely approaches continental Europe. On a clear day, the cliffs are easily visible from the French coast.

"White Cliffs Of Dover" (Lyrics)

Therell be bluebirds over

The white cliffs of Dover

Tomorrow

Just you wait and see

I'll never forget the people I met

Braving those angry skies

I remember well as the shadows fell

The light of hope in their eyes

And though I'm far away

I still can hear them say

Bombs up...

But when the dawn comes up

Therell be bluebirds over, etc

Therell be love and laughter

And peace ever after

Tomorrow

When the world is free

The shepherd will tend his sheep

The valley will bloom again

And Jimmy will go to sleep

In his own little room again

Therell be bluebirds over, etc

Therell be bluebirds over, etc

(There'll be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover was written by Americans Walter Kent and Nat Burton (just prior to the US entry into WWII) in solidarity and sympathy with the British people who were being mercilessly bombed by the Luftwafe. Interestingly, Bluebirds do not appear in Europe; they are only native to North America. In the US, they are supposedly harbingers of good fortune, good luck and happiness.

Communists cursed when Poland was ruled forbid such songs. Ruthenian hard sell to us. That's why I like everything in advance what is not Russian, and yet Vera Lynn is wonderful, is not it?

Walter Kent and Nat Burton were Americans, and they did write the song hoping it would be uplifting to the English, as they were suffering a pounding from the Germans.Blue birds over the white cliffs of Dover were the Spitfire and Hurricane fighter aircraft taking on the Germans when they appeared on the horizon to attack the citizenry below. People watched the air battles from the cliffs. The spitfires and Hurricanes had blue underbellies. Some of the planes were blue, too, but those that weren't still had blue underbellies, hence bluebirds.Little Johnny back in his own little room again is in reference to the children England evacuated, sometimes multiple times, around the country to get them away from bombing sites. Some of the children were evacuated to other countries, including the U.S. Those that were still in England were moved to countryside communities away from favorite German targets.
