"I'd say that MBV play tantric mantras. A mantra is 'a song without an author': on Loveless, MBV's physical presence as players is even more absent than on Isn't Anything, the group are just the faintest membrane, a feather on the breath of God. Tantric refers to a Zen sexual discipline, where intercourse is sustained indefinitely at the brink of orgasm, leading to an out-of-body, transcendental experience. On Isn't Anything and the preceding EP's, MBV went beyond the thrust and grind of phallic rock, to reach a polymorphous state of omnidirectional sensuality: a state that's been called having "a body without organs" - Melody Maker, 1991

I love the way Kevin is so blasé about how simple the techniques for the recording were and modestly attributes a lot of the album's success to competing wordsmiths of the time trying to outdo each other with colourful writing... Then To Here Knows When begins to play, you forget everything he says, and your heart bursts all over again.

I'm so grateful for this album. It has been my favorite for over twenty years. It is so haunting, alien and gorgeous. Space travel music.

everything about Loveless is unique. you can be a noise pop fan and love it, alt. rock and love it and dig it immensely if you're a dance fan. percussion is seemingly almost non-existent except for a few tracks but it's one of the perfect records you can't justify but feel you could if one pondered the thought enough. Kevin Shields is a lost, underrated soul in the history of rock/pop music

loveless stands as the most important creation in human history. greater than any artwork, technology or concept. on its own, it shines as the crowning achievement of our species. and in billions of years when the earth itself is cold dust, it will still remain invulnerable, monumental and unbreakable; the most significant object in the history of our universe.

That whole thing about the instruments on the back is pretty odd

just the two strings tuned together and the tremolo arm... and the backwards reverb, and the fuzztone, and the feedback, and the sampling, and the mic placements, etc. very simple and straight-forward.

Yeah the "other cool people with the leather jackets" like Thin Lizzy who were actual musicians and actually knew how to play their instruments.
