Mustard Plug - The Freshman video free download

I knew these guys, the reason they recorded this song was because they were asked to contribute a song for a local compilation record which a local popular radio station (WGRD) in Grand Rapids was putting out around Christmas time. The station didn't really play-up Mustard Plug despite the fact that they were a signed band and touring internationally, indie bands didn't often get a lot of support from popular alternative stations back then. Instead, the station catered to other local acts which had a softer edge. The Verve Pipe, the band which had originally written and recorded this song, were also from Michigan and signed to RCA records and getting some airplay on this song. So, the guys in Mustard Plug decided to submit a track of their version of this song, it was sort of a spoof and a goof and an inside joke pointed at WGRD. They released "The Freshman" as a B-side through Hopeless Records but RCA Records got pissed off and told them to stop. So there you have it.

Fact: this is a brilliant cover. I appreciate the value of the original, but this is genuinely a clever choice for a ska cover. Fact 2: mustard plug is f'in rad. Deal with it, buy their masterpieces album if you don't believe me.
