I wonder how the Beach Boys found this one? Both in my Beach Boys's "covering and covered 2" playlist. Thanks for uploading -- sounds great!

I haven't heard this since high school! I have been wondering who did this for years. I only knew he also did RED RYDER--and thanks to this having been posted, I finally found that song, too! Many, many thanks for posting this! (Though I did remember it as slower.)

The truth is this is not the original either. This song has been covered many times actually. As a 4th generation Texan, I appreciate this tongue-in-cheek song....when you travel outside of Texas people always think you ride a horse, have an oil well, wear a hat, etc. I love this funny song. Jerry Woodard's version is the original. Nobody does it better than Lyle Lovett in my opinion. He does a slow, R&B type version.

This record made it to number one here in OKC on our local top 40 radio station weekly survey. He had a followup called RED RYDER which did not do as well. Good Post. Larry N. Boyington, aka Larry Neal, former curator of the Wax Museum on the big 1520 KOMA

Sorry I've been away so long but had personal issues to deal with. Thanks for all the comments and I'm happy you enjoyed the song. CombineWizard, Murry was not the orginal singer but he did precede the Beach Boys version. Artists who recorded the song and years are : The Four Flickers - 1959 Jerry Woodard - 1960 Murry Kellum - 1963 The Kingsmen - 1963 The Beach Boys - 1964

Murry must have been the song's original singer, even before the Beach Boys version. This was my high school's theme song, but not alma mater.

I was so thrilled to find this on YouTube. Murry and I were friends back in the'80s and you couldn't hope for a better friend. Whenever I was in town he always took time to show this Norwegian around and to spend time in his home studio. After Murry's tragical plane crash in 1990 I never went back to Nashville. Rest in peace old friend.

I was stationed at Ft Hood, TX when this song was popular. We Gi's would sing it while in rank. Upset the DI very much. I did not know he had passed.

I love this song! It brings back AZ memories for me, too, and I would just have to smile when ever I heard it! My husband's name was Roy and I used this song in his memorial DVD. I missed this when it was pulled some time ago. I hope it stays here as there are obviously lots of us that have a real fondness for it!
