ive talked to the man in person and he has such a low voice. i agree completely with your statment. they are very sweet people and beautiful souls. and his vocals live really dont get that low, only because they are singing one song after another. also the vocals kinda sound like johnny cash(adam is lower in my opinion) on the album, his vocals are more rock and roll live in person.

They're not using effects or special mics on the vocals. Adam has said in interviews that on the earlier albums, he was (subconsciously?) forcing his vocals to be higher than they otherwise would have been. He stopped that when he saw a vocal coach before In Bocca al Lupo, who pointed out that his speaking voice was lower than his singing voice at the time.

I saw them a few years back with Clutch and if they are "ripping off" Cash I'm a monkey's ass. They just know what sound they like and they do it, well.

Im a big MBD fan, seen them live a few times. But his voice sounds like that due to a mic and some sound effecting heh, go listen to some earlier MBD and you will think its an entirely different singer. From what i heard they started using a Baritone Mic after their 3rd album which gives a much deeper clean sound than normal mics. Guys like Frank Sinatra etc used baritone. Just so all of you saying he sounds like Johnny Cash know that its not as natural. Regardless the music is great.

On the harder side of MBD tunes, but baby it's been so long...

I think the best example of the singer sounding like Cash is "White Noise"
