What are the instruments at the end? Sounds like brass, but too low for trumpets and too high for french horns...

For me, most of Mumford & Sons have a double meaning. One is usually focused about people and relationships and the other is a religious meaning. The first meaning I believe is a person who is enraged with someone's actions and their attempts to control him. Seduced and manipulated he is forced into a relationship and he's absolutely miserable. After realizing that he won't tolerate this anymore, he refuses to be with them and tells them plainly I don't care what will happen anymore "I took the road and I f*cked it all away" . He sees them for truly what they are and what they have done. But he leaves a forewarning to both sides that "our choices seal our fates". Their manipulation/seduction of him will certainly have it's consequences and his refusal to continue on as well. The second meaning is somewhat similar but just replace person with Sin. Sin is utterly meaningless: "touch my mouth and hold my tongue, I'll never be your chosen one". Tired of being manipulated and controlled by Sin he rejects the broken crown that it offers him. You can draw paralells with the broken crown with Jesus being offered the world in exchanged for bowing down to Satan. However, after decding what path he'll take he leaves a similar warning saying that "our choices seal our fates" and what decisions we make now, will dominate our lives forever. But that's just my two cents. The beautiful thing about music, whether Atheist, Christian, Capitalist, Communist is that we are free to interpret it as we please. If I do recall correctly, Mumford did say this song was based on one of his relationships...

This song is very personal to me...I grew up in a household that didn't fit me...Things were expected of me from a less than perfect father. As I grew older and now have children of my own I realised exactly how wrong everything had been for so long. I got tormented for the little mistakes I made but I did not talk of his sins!! His values truly are shot!! My heart is flawed but only because it feels!! I will crawl on my belly (like the serpent) but in this twilight how dare he talk to me of grace!!! Hell will meet him at the doors when his time comes...

He sounds angry at his Christianity roots. His music is beautiful but his lyrics sometimes make me a little uncomfortable or kind of question to exactly what he's referring to anyway.

I love how much everyone in the comments loves this song. Everyone can relate this song - either to themselves or to their favourite characters! It's such a universal song, and brilliantly executed. Definitely among my top 10.
