I love how deceptively calm and cheerful the melody is while the lyrics clearly tell a story about being burned at the stake.

It's about a heretic being proud of his chance to die for his beliefs. It's about the gratification that cones with being persecuted. There are biblical references but it's not to imply that the speaker is Jesup or any other specific martyr.

Great song. Giordano Bruno.

It's as if Hemmingway, Bukowski, and Carver had a bastard child they kicked to curb who learned to strum a guitar and sing so sweetly about the hell that brought him into the world - with whiskey.

Not that my opinion matters, but since everyone else is sharing their's.. I always just assumed that a lot of what they're singing is symbolic of people being unfairly judged, punished and dubbed "heretics" for having different ideas and views of the world; compared to what "mainstream" people believe at the time. Whether that is on a big level, spiritual level, or in some small way. There's so much unjust in the world, just seems that's what they're saying to me. The message is to be proud of who you are and what you believe, regardless of other people's reactions to it. Just what I thought.. And honestly the point of good music is to make you feel something individual to you, I think. So who cares if someone else doesn't see it the same way as you? It could be about Jesus, it could be about the Salem Witch Trails or some of the various other witch trails, but it seems too general to be specific to one particular person or story.

First off, I'd like to say that TMG have become one of my new favorite artists. Second, there's nothing wrong with a band being discovered by other people through a reference who is a fan. Music belongs to everyone, not just one group.

this song is about a heretic being burned, which jesus was not. in the song, the people doing the burning, are probably the followers of jesus.

I burst out laughing when he sang "I feel so proud when the reckoning arrives."

Made me think of somebody being burned for being a witch during the Salem Witch Trials.
