Lyrics (with many thanks to danldunham)

I know the downs are white with apple blossoms,

That float and fall from off the twisted bough,

I know the downs are white with blossoms,

O how I long for Londonderry now.

The shamrock coyly raises its little head,

With dewdrops glowing on the sunlit plain,

In my dear homeland now the apple bloom is white,

Ah, would that I were there again.

There is no air as fragrant as the breeze blown.,

Across the Foyle, my heart will ever vow;

There is no thrush whose note has such a sweet tone

As warbles on a Londonderry bough.

There is no stream can equal the dancing Foyle,

Its beauty glowing on the sunlit plain,

In my dear homeland now the appleblosson is white,

Ah, would that I were there Again.

The even older / ancient lyrics are far more poignant and melancholy. . . Would God I were the tender apple blossom That floats and falls from off the twisted bough To lie and faint within your silken bosom Within your silken bosom as that does now. Or would I were a little burnish'd apple For you to pluck me, gliding by so cold While sun and shade you robe of lawn will dapple Your robe of lawn, and you hair's spun gold. ~Yea, would to God I were among the roses That lean to kiss you as you float between While on the lowest branch a bud uncloses A bud uncloses, to touch you, queen. Nay, since you will not love, would I were growing A happy daisy, in the garden path That so your silver foot might press me going Might press me going even unto death.

The MoTab Choir was a lot better under the directorship of Richard Condie. This is one of these recordings courtesy of Columbia Records.

I don't like these lyrics near as much as the ones Most Often Sung for this song. These lyrics cannot compare to the depths, pathos and sorrows of the most Famous Lyrics. I have no idea why they would sing this. This song is Forever Iconically associated with the Other Lyrics!!!

The Choir sang one other different lyrical setting, called An Irish Love Song, with words by Katherine T Hinkson. However, the words as heard on the CD "AROUND THE WORLD a musical journey of best-loved favourites" do not quite match that given in Wikipedia which is: Would God I were the tender apple blossomThat floats and falls from off the twisted boughTo lie and faint within your silken bosomWithin your silken bosom as that does now.Or would I were a little burnish'd appleFor you to pluck me, gliding by so cold,While sun and shade your robe of lawn will dapple,Your robe of lawn and your hair of spun gold.

This is so very soothind!! It has been my dream to go there. I am 79 years old, and this video is about as close as I will. I, however, feel so blessed to have the experience of closing my eyes and fulfilling the live-long dreams of being there.

@classicvinylbiz Here are the lyrics sent to me from the Choir Office: (first part) Frederick H. Martens, Arr. Ralph L. Baldwin I know the downs are white with apple blossoms, That float and fall from off the twisted bough, I know the downs are white with blossoms, O how I long for Londonderry now. The shamrock coyly raises its little head, With dewdrops glowing on the sunlit plain, In my dear homeland now the apple bloom is white, Ah, would that I were there again.

@danldunham Yes, I see what you mean. I've removed the lyrics that I had added; I don't have time at the moment to research the lyrics for this particular version, but I did find a discussion that might contain the information you seek. Go to mudcat (dot) com, add the forward slash, then add thread (dot) cfm?threadid=4555 If you do fine the lyrics I'd be grateful if you'd let me know so I can add them. regards, david

@classicvinylbiz I know it's hard to tell what the words are being sung the way it is done in this version, as beautiful as it is. But as best as I can tell there are different words being sung than the lyrics shown above. Especially at 2:24 the words seem to be 'There is no air....", not found in the above lyrics. Oh well, I will keep looking.
