Recorded August 22, 1934 for Decca. This recording was originally released on Decca in 1934. This is a later (possibly 1940) re-release of that recording.

Tatum recorded Moonglow several times ... the first time in 1934, the second time in 1940 (label Decca) .. this is the second record, 1940 ... I tried to upload the 1934 recording - which is more virtuosistic - but youtube blocks the video (I do not know why) ...

It may be a 1940 recording, but it was first released in 1934, the first year Decca released records. CDB

Listening to this, I can imagine it must have been something like this to stand and listen to Beethoven or Mozart improvise, those lucky few (aristocrats) who got to hear it. We are lucky, Art Tatum belongs to us all. Beethoven would have said, hearing this, "holy fucking shit! How the hell does this guy do it??? He is fucking unreal"!!

Genius. Nothing more to say. He probably thought what he did was all very simple ! God given.

Strewth! If the recording date hadnt been put up here, i would have guessed at the late '40's. Just sounds so sophisticated for 1934. You can tell that Art Tatum influenced Teddy Wilson to a large extent in those trills and descending arabesques. Astounding piano playing

Art was an amazing pianist: his music is fiendishly difficult! Even Rachmaninoff thought he was the greatest pianist of his day!!
