Amazing rendition by Montserrat Caballe, she sings a wonderfully light high D in the cadenza before the end! A perfect example of Caballe's coloratura and upper register, though she was not known for either, this shows she was capable of singing lyric-coloratura quite well.

Have you heard the 1965 NYC version? It's out of this world.

I love how she kept her high notes on reserve for certain arias.

Absolutely. Truly one of her most complete recorded performances. Every inch a great diva. I love her Norma performance at Orange in '74 too. Majestic.

her 1968 pirated recording of "Roberto Devereux" is truly her best in that most dificult role.

Oh the Lucia is bad. She's sharp in all the arias, and the screams in the cabaletta are probably the worst in her recorded career. The duet with Carreras is very nice though. I really enjoyed Caballe's coloratura in Il Pirata, Il Trovatore and Lucrezia Borgia too. I even think she does a really good job in the 1st act of Roberta Devereux, even if Sills owns that aria.

I think her "I Puritani" is fairly decent, she doesn't add the interpolated notes everybody else does, but she sings within the written range and it's good. Her Lucia is horrible though, she screams on the high tessitura...she even did some awful screaming in roles centered lower but that went high, such as Elisabetta in Rossini's opera, which only goes to B5 but often held.

Indeed. The duet with Verrett in the Semiramide recording is also great, with Caballe showing great speed and versatility in coloratura taking on the middle-to low runs :) It was really the high lyric Bel Canto coloratura she struggled with, like Lucia, La Sonnambula and the recording she did of Elvira in I Puritani.

Yes, I think her "D'amore al dolce impero" is really good, also her big scene as Mina in Aroldo shows quasi-Assoluta potential (though she lacked the lower and upper extensions expected).

Still so wonderful. I've just listened to Freni version, a lighter, brighter voice and she doesn't sing the coloratura half as well as Caballe does here. Caballe wasn't a natural coloratura, but she developed a very solid technique that allowed her to sing with really competent agility, even in the roles that require more dramatic flexibility. Fabulous.

Merci pour cet air magnifiquement chanté par M.Caballé. Et que les pseido spécialistes arrêtent de nous gonfler avec leur purisme. Le jour où ils arriveront à faire le dixième de ce qu'elle fait, ils pourront la ramener!!!
