For Valentine's Day, V-Day, and, simply, any day, year-round romance, here's "Montreal" - a love song that joins Allison Crowe's other originals such as "Wedding Song" and her covers, including "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)", in expressing the heart.

During her years touring across Canada, Allison Crowe has performed in a range of concert venues in la belle province, Quebec, in the beautiful city of Montreal - from La Sala Rossa to Place des Arts.

On her first visit, she performed at a jazz venue in the old city, (or Vieux-Montréal), called Upstairs and it's there and then she penned this ballad. Allison Crowe, vocals and piano, is joined on this recording by Dave Baird, on bass, and Kevin Clevette, on drums. This song recording is on her "Secrets" CD.

Montreal

Words & Music by Allison Crowe

Spent a little time in Montreal

With a fire in the sun

Smokescreen covering

Over the entire city

And you know

I think that I saw you

In a different light

Whether or not

It was the wine

A quiet determination

Maybe something or someone

That you didn't know existed in you

And I think that I loved you

Even more

So come on

Follow me down the alleyway

Upside down sign is hanging upright

In the door

Sitting on the steps in Montreal

I'm waiting for you

To spread your wings

Rage building

Held under by a desire

To understand

And I think I got it

The mystery that

I saw in my dreams

Became you in the flesh

Bones and all

S' come on,

Follow me down the alleyway

Upside down sign is hanging upright

In the door

Sitting on the steps in Montreal

I'm waiting for you

To spread your wings

You just sat there

In the background on the canvas

Watching me

Knowing every little fear

Phobia and twitch

Quietly laughing to yourself

Keeping me inside you

Away from the fear

Surrounding me

Come on,

Follow me down the alleyway

Upside down sign is hanging upright

In the door

Sitting on the steps in Montreal

I'm waiting for you

To spread your wings...

@ellilela if I remember correctly - the fire was in 2002 or 2003 - and the Upstairs sign - that's the name of the Montreal jazz club Allison performed on that tour, and the sign, literally, is upside down! LG, Adrian

@ellilela Allison wrote this song after visiting Montreal, a beautiful city in the province of Quebec, Canada. At the time, there were forest fires burning in the James Bay region. Smoke from the fires reached Montreal and made the city appear sepia-tinted as in an old photograph. The rest of the meaning is whatever is in the song for you - love, life and more :)

Amazing. Thank you Allison and Adrian. Speechless, as usual when it comes to her.
