Better question? Why bring a long rifle into a place with limited space and the space you do have is narrow and not rifle-friendly? You have more luck with an MP40 because of the small size.

No I mean think about it: I know there must be limited space in the crate, however it looked to me like, even if I were squatting inside, the rifle should've been able to fit inside too considering the rifle can't be much taller than I if I were crouched in the crate. Right?

M1 Garand and Gewer 45 are my favorites rifles. I love these guns! Springfield is a shit, only 5 bullets and is very slow, I dislike this gun.
