try the Nick Cave version too, its over the top in its delivery, but really original & pretty gnarly.

longevity is but built upon firm foundation " ask the little pig who built with brick. "And I'll Huff and Puff and blow your house down"...ask the wolf. I know who Pooh Bear is.

I've discovered this legendary music through the clash's "wrong 'em boyo". Including an excerpt of lloyd price's stagger lee version. It's amazing how the same stories are told through different generations of blues and rock.

All of the versions of "Stagger Lee" I can think of by musicians born before 1898 -- including Hurt, Jesse Fuller, Ed Haley, Jesse Harris, Harvey Hull, Frank Hutchison, and David Miller -- have this 12-bar form (not the 8-bar form that Lloyd Price used).

This is the 1964 Library of Congres recording. It is interesting to hear how he stays true to the 11 bar form of his original 1928 recording.

Much like Moses who brought down the Ten Strokes necessary from God for the existence of a civil society, MJH came down from the Mount with basic chord progressions necessary to build guitar blues upon. And thank God he did and spent just a little bit of time our way...amazing talent.

I can play lots of folk songs, but this one is really hard. I'm gonna practise until I get it. Never as good as this genius... truly beautiful and touching performance(s)!
