A hauntingly beautiful song, especially in this acoustic version, with its stark and sorrowful piano accompaniment.
My video focuses on a common theme in Counting Crows songs, wherein beautiful (human) women are elevated to the status of angels, making them both terrifyingly powerful and irresistibly desirable. Millers "angels" may or may not be dangerous and it's entirely possible that they intend to separate him from God.
In my depiction, a woman who walks on solid earth is trying to tempt Miller into a relationship using the powerful religious poetry of Rumi as her lure. Can she persuade him to stop living in a dream? Will he be willing to risk walking out his door with her, even though a heavenly creature might ruin him at any time? Will he become a more confident, enlightened man? A man who can endure true intimacy?
**Please note that when Rūmī suggests you 'die' he is talking about a spiritual death and rebirth rather than actual physical death.
Material for my video came from:
The astonishing Wim Wenders film, "Wings of Desire"
The beautiful and inspiring videos of YouTuber, FenandiCreations
The abundance of Google images
and
The incomparable poetry of Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī (1207-1273), a Persian Muslim poet, jurist, theologian and Sufi mystic.
Thanks for watching!
Lyrics below:
Miller's Angels (Demo Version)
Miller's angels in black and white
Welcome everyone in
Children dreamin' of wrong and right
Wrapped in grace and in sin
They come out of the blue sky
They come out of the blue
They come out of the blue sky
But you never know
Where they're gonna' go
Hey, Romeo
Miller's fingers are travelin'
Down the length of her thigh
Miller's mind is still wanderin'
Staring up at the sky
They come out of the blue sky
They come out of the blue
They come out of the blue sky
But you never know
Where they're gonna go
Hey, Romeo
Don't, don't, don't
Don't, don't, don't, don't, don't
Come around, don't, don't
Please, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't
Come around
Please, don't, don't, don't
Don't, don't, don't, don't, don't
Come around
Miller's angels are hoverin'
In between the earth and the sun
In the shadow of God's unwavering love
I am a fortunate son
They come out of the blue sky
They come out of the blue
They come out of the blue sky
But you never know
Where they're gonna go
Hey, Romeo
No, you never know
Where they're gonna go
Hey, Romeo
So, can't you hear me
'Cause I'm screamin'
But, I did not go outside yesterday
So, don't wake me
Please, don't wake me
'Cause I'm dreamin'
And I might not go outside again today
Yeah, I don't get outside much, anyway
Yeah, I don't go outside much, these days
