Mick Ronson - Slaughter On Tenth Avenue (Live Audio) Feb. 1974

Rainbow Theatre, Finsbury Park, North London.

These were Mick's first post Bo solo gigs and I was at these shows and during one or two songs Mick was obviously nervous. He suppressed a smirk during Growing Up And I'm Fine at the piano and was finally getting his confidence when he had the Les Paul plugged in. Remember this guy scored and arranged alot of Bo's Ziggy and pre Ziggy work. As his wife said - He was born with that extra something.

I went to 2 of the gigs at the Rainbow... Got a few of th free publicity packs on one night (Ronson at the Rainbow, then the second Ronson on tour, wish I had them now... the last night, I was pulling down posters for people as I was tall..... I gave out the programs to those on the Trains that did not get them....... Great Crowd of Fans at Both Gigs...

You are so right! There have been many many versions of this haunting tune. I first heard a big band arrangement of it back in 1956 - and I've been hooked on it for almost 60 years! Ronson captures a lot of the great flavor of this one. : )

And no one remembers the composer of Slaughter on Tenth Avenue? Fellow by the name of Richard Rodgers, kinda famous with his partners, Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II. Nah, why bring this up?

Great track. The piano player sounds absolutely wonderful, and mick is as tasty-sounding as ever.

I used to have "Slaughter On 10th Avenue" but I let a friend borrow which he never returned. Damn thief ! I would like to listen to it about right now. I did like the album, and I love Ronson's playing. He had flair with flash, dramatic's and style ! R.I.P. Mick !

@milolovesmusic =Uwere blessed to have shared time with one of the greats...& while it is not required that great artists be also lovely, down to earth people w/the gift of humility (I can still like an artist's work even if they were a personal nightmare) but it adds to the joy of experiencing their evocative, touching work to feel that the "heart" in their work emanated from a real non-flawless but seemingly deep & soulful person. Same w/ say Geo. Harrison.Lovely version of pedestrian original

I live blocks from Berklee School of Music=daily churns out players who could technically "destroy" Mick (&..remember in those pre-VanHalen speeddemon days.. guys like Zappa etc could play circles around him quantity-wise & pallete-wise) but..just like Paul Kossoff=wrote simple killer riff 2 All Right Now in his teensthat lives forever..Mick had incredible taste, his playing less is so much more. so lyrical & tells a story w/his instrument &..just like a singer.. his held notes & vibrato kill me

There's a great version of this he did with the Ian Hunter Band on the "Welcome to the Club" live album.
