A demo of the Doobie Brothers classic. This song ushered Michael McDonald's entry as a Doobie Brother frontman and songwriter. The demo itself reveals that the piano parts have been pretty much written into the song from the beginning though the lyrics haven't been fully realized. I think the final arrangement is quite ambitious and a big departure from the typical Doobie Brothers recording at the time with well orchestrated drums, congas, sax, bass, guitar, and vocal harmonies.

This is a true privilege to listen to this song in the process of being created, what a treasure this piece of history is! How exciting it is to listen to Michael at work here! Made my pulse quicken and my breath be caught up for sure! Love it! In the true compliment form of imitation, I have been trying to teach myself to play this song on my keyboard, not nearly as beautiful as Michael puts it together, and I'm still learning it, but I do love to try to play it like he does.
