BTW " Michael Jackson" - Michael's history of royalty percentages was and probably still is, the largest of any top artist in any era - check it out - it is a matter of fact. Of course no artist worthy of the name would refuse to record a great song simply because SOME royalties would be payable to YMO/ Greg - its because he did not offer them a reasonable percentage for such a monster song. Maybe thats why he sang half -heartedly on his version released after his death - not worthy of his great name but a posthumous cash -in by the Record Label/ his estate

yumikumi, you must have different ears from me - the synth riff alone scores 100% on the great riff factor - you should listen to ALL the versions of this killer song [which would have been on the best selling Thriller if there were not royalties disputes with the original instrumental version by the Japanese group Yellow Magic Orchestra. - check out also the Enola Quintet piano trio version too but the definitive version is still Greg Phillinganes 1984 which was copied directly by Eric Clapton in 987. Michael's original version was poorly produced and many times his vocals sound too obviously a later overdub -- the instrumental background is straight from Greg's version.. Go Listen !

it's ok, but i got to say, no matter who i hear sing this song, it's not a strong or rememberable song that'll stay timeless so i hope people take off they "favorite artist"glasses and see the song for what it actually is.

It baffles me that this gets called a Michael Jackson song. He stole it part and parcel. The whole reason it was never released back then was he refused to pay its original authors YMO any royalties. When Eric Clapton covered it, he found out he had to pay Michael royalties because of weird US copyright laws, and felt so bad that he had the original writer, Ryuichi Sakemoto tour with him for a while to pay him back for all the success the song had given him.
