Hutchence was the farthest thing from a one-hit wonder (as the bandleader of *Big Country* was). It wasn't his career that killed him...but, in a way, it was. During a progressive career that was just a hair short of superstardom, he accumulated so much wealth and privilege that he became totally deprived of the kinds of things most of us spend our days worrying about, and the few problems he had, which even stars can't avoid, became magnified in order to fill the vacuum. Plenty of men face custody battles without committing suicide because of them; but those other men also must worry about mortgage, car loan, pleasing a tyrannical boss at work, affording a prostate exam, etc. etc. Those other concerns help buffer the impact of emotional stressors. In Hutchence's case, there were no buffers, and the one real problem he had expanded into an unbearable torment. It's an object lesson to those who dream of stardom.
