Michael Giles is an English drummer, best known as a co-founder of King Crimson in 1969. Prior to the formation of Crimson, he also co-founded the short-lived Giles, Giles & Fripp with his brother, Peter, and Robert Fripp the previous year.

Giles left the King Crimson in December 1969, though he played as a session musician on the band's second album, In The Wake Of Poseidon. He joined Ian McDonald to record an album called McDonald and Giles, which was much lighter in style than King Crimson, but just as challenging musically. Giles then worked as a session musician for the duration of the 1970s, working with many popular artists including Leo Sayer, Steve Winwood, and Yvonne Elliman. A solo album, Progress, was recorded at his home studio in 1978, but wasn't released until 2003. He continues to work as a session musician.

It's usually not a "large" ego but rather a defensive one that artist almost must have while in a mixed crowd of sometimes dangerous personalities, and the press always ready to eat one alive. Look at Van Morrison!!!

@jwild611 Every King Crimson member from that time was an kind of an ass. They have large egos, and generally don't like the common crowd. Anyways, you can't just expect most of your favorite musicians to have a perfect personality, they are still people, and people are flawed.

well each of them are unique in the drummers world,bruford is the master in english perfection and brillance skills and chops.giles is the master in the expressive impetu to aproach and orchestral on drums.i am sure that bruford learn so much from giles.

I didnt know Mike Giles released an album in 1978, I thought it was just the Mc Donald and Giles one he did. One of my favourite drummers. Good to hear some proper drumming in the time of Punk and New wave. A far superior drummer to any of those drummers from the Punk and New Wave era.

Had to revisit and subscribe... Thanks for the post !!! Took your advice and bought the album @ East West records in Orlando ... (one of the last indie music stores I know of... been here since mid-seventies) They had TWO in stock.... not unusual, Hannah always has a lot of anything related to Crimson on hand. ( YOW ! 5 v bright stars)

@MrKennyBones KC were more jazz orientated than prog. compared to other prog artists they're not that similar (i'd say better), they have their own style.

I thank Michael Giles for absolutely blowing my mind when I was a young impressionable lad. His precise playing combined with an absolutely unique style and great drum sound was to me one of the strong points of the original King Crimson

I agree, he's got a very distinct way of playing and actually stands out, even compared to THE Brill Bruford. This music however doesn't have enough "meat on it's legs" to be compared to King Crimson or any of the other prog bands really. But then again, this is much more jazzy.
