Artist: Mercyful Fate

Song: Witche's Dance

Album: Time

Year: 1994

Lyrics:

Just like a demon's eye

The moon was dancing on the blackened sky

In my sleep nothing is real, dreaming... I'm dreaming

I can feel the shadows lurking

I can feel them closing in

I can hear their evil chanting

This is not a dream for a king

[Chorus:]

Dancing the Witche's Dance... Dancing the Dance

Dancing the Witche's Dance... Dancing the Dance

Cold hands, leading the way

Through the woods and into the night

Outside nothing is real, dreaming... I'm dreaming

I can see a fire burning

Hooded shapes are all around

I can see a throne of silver

Thirteen we are in all

[Chorus]

Before the Goat Of Mendes... We all must take our turn

Into the magic circle... Where still the fire burns

We're spinning round and round... Until one takes a fall

The fallen one will not return, the fallen one must burn

[Solo: D]

Just like a demon's eye

The moon is dancing on the blackened sky

I'm awake but nothing is real

Dreaming... Not dreaming

I can feel the shadows lurking

I can feel them closing in

I can hear their evil chanting

This is not a dream at all

[Chorus]

I wish this was only a dream... A dream

Within a dream

[Solo: S/D]

This was a great song... but this album is the first release King Diamond ever sang on that lacks as a classic... and he unfortunately never "got it back" entirely. If you want to know which albums are true King Diamond/Mercyful Fate classics, here's the basic rule: either Timi Hansen or Mikkey Dee (or both) played on it. Not that several other guys weren't crucial to the making of those early classics... it just turns out there were no truly magical KD or MF albums that didn't include either Timi or Mikkey. So if you see one of those two names in the liner notes, enjoy one of metal's all-time greatest albums. If you don't, enjoy a "pretty good" album by King Diamond and/or Mercyful Fate. It's a shame too, because despite this album's overall mediocrity, it had a shitload of potential to become a classic. Several great songs (albeit mixed with some weaker tunes) and lots of moments for King to shine, but he mostly blew it... he was starting to lose his voice by this time. Also, Snowy Shaw did a fucking great job on this as a drummer, but the stars just didn't line up for the record as a whole. That kinda sucks too, because this is the first time we really get to hear Snowy kick ass on drums (instead of fakey sounding drum pads). This was supposed to be Snowy Shaw's moment. Oh well. All bands lose the magic eventually.
