Melle Mel is probably one of the reasons why we have this thing called hip hop. Certainly with out him the likes snoop dog dre etc would not be enjoying the life styles they enjoy. Between melle Mel and cool herc basically they are hip hop.

Agreed. Melle Mel's performances in Step Off and Beat Street Break Down can stand up to virtually anything commercially popular at this time. Perhaps, many rappers, especially in the independent circuit, might be more diverse in their style in terms of wordplay, delivery, etc. But when it comes to the mechanics of being the complete MC and having cultural impact, Melle Mel is in a distinct class. If we're basing things on "today's standards," Melle Mel's materiall sounds MUCH better.
