This is the Blitzstein version, from the original US production in the fifties. Sung as I recall by Bea Arthur. Other translations are arguably better. It is sung by the pregnant Lucy Brown, daughter of Macheath's war buddy Tiger Brown, now elevated to police commissioner and thoroughly corrupt. The Blitztstein version sanitized the play, eliminating a scene in which Lucy's pregnancy is discussed and cutting a verse about Jenny's abortion (this was the fifties, after all).

She does character singing so well and it gives me a lot to consider for doing this piece. I adore her acting and singing!

Beacause it's being performed in an english speaking country? Now yes, if it was the Berliner Ensemble performing the show, you'd want it to be German. But not if it was an American production for Americans. That would just be pointless and most likely offensive to the country and language of origin.

Just been looking for the Julie Covington version of this - that's better than this one.

I like the translation better. It was the first one I heard, and after listening to original, I found that all my favorite things were found in the translation... It's a damn good translation.

they actually wanted and pleaded for an English translation.

but the translation was approved by the lyricist, composer and Lotte Lenya........... so it ran for over 2000 performances here in NYC at the Lys theater in my neighborhood, Greenwhich Village...........

Wow, she has a great voice. I knew she sang, but I admit I didn't expect to be impressed. I love her voice - she sounds a bit like Bernadette Peters actually.

@h0wud0in2 If you think about it actually, English is a beautiful language! I mean the way she sings per-pen-dic-u-lar...it flows really well, it's such a soft language. It doesn't matter what language it is in as long as you understand context and emotion.

Great song by an amazing singer/actress. Megan is the sexiest woman ever on a TV series and the funniest. She is intelligent and a great stage actress. What a lady.
