Maynard Ferguson performing Shaft. I believe this may be from 1972 per an other person's posting of a song from this same show.

I am quite sure that this guy playing the trumpet and making the show is Bill Chase. The haircut, the way he moves, the high register capabilities. Still I am confused because if that was shot in 1972, or let's say the early 70's, Bill already had his own band. So why would he be playing with MF?

Was this recorded in Richmond VA at JR Tucker High School?

Always interesting to me that MF often had another high-note trumpet player in the band who could go as high as Maynard!

I didn't know Ferguson played slide trombone, too. Until this vid, I'd only seen him playing valve trombone.

Why is the band dressed in prison stripes? Did they wrongly get the shaft and sent to the slammer?

One of MFs best arrangements. Still has that same vibe in 2015!

I saw Maynard in 71 in Cinci at Amelia High School. This line up looks changed.

The critics can say what they want about Maynard, but no one ever played with more energy.
