I was extremely fortunate in 1979 to receive a Gold Record for the beautiful ballad "Lead Me On" by Maxine Nightingale. I was told by Susan Wax, the Southern Secondary Promotions Director for RCA Records, the company that manufactured and distributed Maxine's song on Windsong Records, that my willingness to add a ballad to our playlist at WBSR in Pensacola, FL and report it to the national trade publications during a time dominated by Disco and Dance Music was the determining factor. My award was also personalized, something that RCA generally did not do, as they usually made the award to the radio station and not to an individual. I was also told only a few Gold Records on this tune were awarded to the Radio Industry making me one of a very select group of radio programmers. "Lead Me On" sold in excess of one million copies and hit #1 on the American Adult Contemporary Chart, #5 on the American Top 100 Pop Chart, and went into the Top 10 in both Canada and New Zealand. Maxine is still performing and was recently seen on a PBS show paying tribute to '70s and '80s music singing one of her other big hits "Right Back Where We Started From". I hope you enjoy the video, my personal story that goes with it, and will share the music.
