Just one of many, many lovely songs from Matt Monro. He made goosebumps appear for me in my 'teens and nothing has changed; the very second his beautiful voice begins any one of his songs you can feel yourself relax and emotions wash over you. I love absolutely everything he ever sang and they are eternal in voice, music and lyrics.

The back story of this song is that it was written by the composer as a pean to his terminally ill wife of many years right before she died...so terribly sad...

A singer once said "his pitch was right on the nose, his enunciation letter perfect , his understanding of a song thorough. He will be missed very much ,not only by Myself , but by his fans all over the world". The singer was frank Sinatra speaking after the death of Matt Monro

As a 54 year old, ex-sailor I was doing well at my Uncle's funeral ... until Matt started singing this, the last song. It ripped my heart out and I cracked. What a wonderful love-song for someone you have lost. Thanks for posting it ... and you have done a wonderful job with your selection of accompanying images.

Sometimes the strongest women are the ones who love beyond all faults, cry behind closed doors and fight battles that nobody knows about. Women are the strongest of the human race. When they cry they cry for all mankind!

Good old Matt, gave 'Ol Blue Eyes a run for his money with this great interpretation. My favourite Monroe recording is "One day". Check it out if you like him.

In his beautiful voice Matt Monro sings out the pain, and your nostalgic video scenes bring the emotional feelings to life. If there's a soft way to leave, this song is it. Thanks for sharing your creativity and admiration for wonderful music. With love from Canada, Evy

"Softly, as I Leave You" is a popular Italian song composed by Giorgio Calabrese and Tony De Vita (1932–1998), translated into English by Hal Shaper. It was originally an Italian success by Mina, at the Sanremo Music Festival, entitled "Piano" ("Softly"). Mina published a recording of the song first as a single in 1960 and later as well on an EP and on three LPs.

just want to respectfully correct your version of the story: a man who laid dying in a Florida hospital penned these words to his wife. His wife had kept a wakeful vigil by her husbands deathbed. When she had finally fallen asleep he wrote these words to her. Elvis Presley told this story in concert.
