In Rennes, a breton university town which was then a musical center. The band had references like The Stooges, Velvet Underground, Television, Talking Heads or the Stranglers. Il lasted two years only, but became then a cult groupe en France, because of their impressive performances on stage, with lot of significant gestures by Pascal (you can see that on the photos in my video).
"Dantzig Twist", their first album (1978) was a succession of raw, tortured and surrealistic pieces, like "Conradt Veidt, or "Japanese spy".
Their masterwork is "Rue de Siam", second and last album (1979), where the band was joigned by two sax players from Rennes, Daniel Herpin and Philippe Paboeuf, which brought a touch of "white funk", and Mico Nissim, keyboards player. Produced by Steve Nye (who worked with Japan, David Sylvian), Rue de Siam is a dark and dynamic jewel, with elaborate and relentless rhythmics. Written in english, the songs are about tormented themas : SM with Wanda's loving boy, the planned "suicides" of members of the terrorist RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion) in german Stammheim jail (Final fog), or a lost world war II japanese solider, still on his island 30 years after the war (Iwo Jima Song), not to mention the "groovy" "Cancer and drugs" (groovy in the rhythm, not in the words !). Including the frightening "Back to cruelty", my choice. The same titled song "Rue de Siam" describes a dark night wandering in the streets of Brest, great breton harbor.
Unfortunately, Philippe Pascal didn't accept this "white funk" orientation. The groupe split. Pascal created the dark and absolutely no-funk "Marc Seberg".
