From my observation, gay people tend towards faster styles of music in general. Having said this, trance isn't super popular due to the snobbishness of many of its listeners and its simultaneous emphasis on both melody and rhythm. While its true that many trance artists are borrowing the heavy bass style of house, a lot of house seems to be going more melodic (if only a little). If EDM stays big, trance will rise at some point.
