KPOI-FM used to play this a lot in the early 70s, along with "The City" and "Tramp and the Young Girl". I remember Jon Mark's mishap around the time Rising came out. Fell out of a tree apparently with his ring caught on a branch. At the time I thought there was a conservative message in this song.

Was Johnny Almond any relation to Marc Almond (of 80's English new wave group Soft Cell (best known for their smash hit "Tainted Love") fame)?

Mark Almond - "What Am I Living For" ( Rising ) 1972.......Well I said to my best friend, can't you see what a mess I'm in?My daddy he taught me to drink whiskyBut my momma she died from a-drinkin' ginMy brother, he works in a coal mine, works so hard to get his payMy sister, she believes in sweet lord JesusAnd she's waitin' for redemption dayWhat am I livin' for?Why am I living, why am I giving all my lifeTo bring up a family, children, and wifeTell me my friend hasn't that been done before?I remember my first job, I was singin' with a bandEvery payday came aroundI'd take my money from the manHe said "Now spend it wisely, boy, or save it while you have the time"But I got drunk on a standAnd I blew the bandNow I'm standing in the unemployment lineWhat am I livin' for?Why am I living, why am I giving all my lifeTo bring up a family, children, and wifeTell me my friend hasn't that been done before?I had me a sweet woman, mine until the sun don't shineI came home one morning, earlyAnd I found her with a friend of mineIt's not so much I needed herBut oh, God, how to stay awayI packed my bags, and I hit the roadAnd I've never seen her to this dayWhat am I livin' for?Why am I living, why am I giving all my lifeTo bring up a family, children, and wifeListen my friend, its been done before

I remember hearing this on WSHE , Miami's alternative, "heavy" radio station of the early 1970s. Thanks for posting.

Saw them twice backing It's A Beautiful Day and, later, King Crimson. Stole the shows. Dannie Richmond on drums and Jonny Almond were astounding. This song and album got me started. I went backward to Mark-Almond I & II from there. Awesome albums all.

There is a trilogy called something like Solitude - The Bay - Friends... This is one of my favorites. This is great though. That same "Mark-Almond" vocal. The funny thing is when I bought the album I thought it was an Almond Brothers album, but like this better than the Almond Brothers!

I agree with everyone here. One of the best songs ever written. Brilliant. Fantastic. Beautiful. Song sticks with you forever once you hear it. Jon Mark is unmatched here. This song is begging to be covered again by someone who can hope to approach Jon Mark's brilliance and sincerity. Maybe a female vocalist. Diana Krall? RIP Mr. Almond -- 2 years gone this Nov 18 -- will always love your sax playing.
