Yes, Mario had an amazing voice, but he could never be in opera like Caruso, he was a film and stage performer, great with a programme of solos e.t.c. If you want to hear the difference, listen to his 'La donne Mobile' and compare it with Carouso or Gigli, singing the same song. When it comes to the run of single notes at the end, Lanza merges them all together, not hitting each note seperately. Great Performer, died at 39 due to sheer glutteny! Beautiful song. Considered old fashioned now. I still think it is stunning. I read that Mario Lanza was considered great in his day.I'm not sure how he rated amongst the great tenors of his day. I would think he was exceptional.
