During the 40s and 50s Margaret Whiting was a singer

of Popular and Country music.

She had big hits with --

A Tree in the Meadow -- 1948 1

Far Away Places -- 1948 2

Slippin' Around -- 1948 1

The Money Tree -- 1956 20

I could not find a good photo of Margaret.

I colored a B&W photo. Hope it looks OK.

I've read that there was something very unusual about this song. Usually, the vocalist and orchestra are in the same recording studio. However, in this case (or so I've read) the background music was recorded in England and then sent to Hollywood where Margaret Whiting added her voice to the recording. This had never been done before.

I sang this at a style show when I was in high school in 1948..My husband and I had our first date that night. We have been married 62 years. A lot of cherished memories.

How fascinating to read all the posts listed below of people who remember hearing this fabulous song in 1948. That was a long time ago...A different time and a different world.

This song was written by Billy Reid a uk song writer, his lover Dorothy Squires 1915-1998 made the song famous in the uk, she came up with the opening line after visiting a field with a Tree In The Meadow. This version is nice.

I think this is one of the very first popular song I ever remember hearing. I was 9-years old in 1948. I'm 73 now and still remember the words to it.

Where or where did you get this fabulous version of this song? I have looked and looked for it but could never find it. THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS EVER.. (and I am only 44 years old.) I remember hearing this version on the radio station "Music of your life" in Indianapolis in the 80's. Thank you so much for posting this blessed recording. What a voice.. and what a beautiful tune. My grandmother would have loved this song, too.
