NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Planetary 102) Out of Los Angeles, this highly coveted and sought after single among Girl Group and Soul record collectors is the debut release of only two magnificently constructed singles by David Gates for the then thirteen year old, Margaret Mandolph.

Introduced to singer/songwriter/arranger/producer extraordinaire, David Gates in 1963, Miss Mandolph sang the demo version of the new Gates composition, 'Popsicles and Icicles' which was recorded and became a huge hit that same year by The Murmaids.

Striking up a deal with Dot Records, Mr. Gates started up his own label, Planetary Records which was distributed by Dot Records. In operation for less than a year with just eight single releases between December 1964 and May 1965, Gates oversaw the production of all of the recordings. Along with the two Planetary singles by Margaret Mandolph, there were two classic Girl Pop Soul singles by Dorothy Berry, two in the teen sound by the duo, Grady & Brady and two singles by David Gates with one of those credited as Del Ashley.

Margaret's two Planetary discs are Girl Pop bliss in the highest order with classy arrangements played flawlessly by L.A.'s 'Wrecking Crew'. How they were released and sank without a trace is mind boggling considering the care and attention applied in their production.

Miss Mandolph later toured Europe in the production of 'Hair' and eventually hooked up with a group specializing in jazz music called 'Love Joy'. She was quite active and well-known within the Oakland California area, where she lent her vocal talent in musical productions written by her brother Bobby Mandolph who recorded for Vault Records in the 1960's and was also a member of the group, 'Purple Olive'.

Margaret married Robert H. Greene in 1966 at the young age of fifteen and then eventually the couple divorced eighteen years later in 1984. Sadly, at only 50 years old, Margaret Mandolph-Greene passed away on August 2, 2002.

Wow. Just WOW. This is the dictionary definition of "ear candy". It's been a few days and the rush is starting to wear off a bit; I've gone from listening 20 times in succession down to only five or six, but ... still wow! This song is immediately enshrined in the Pantheon of Sublime ...

Th@'s most definitely the Blossoms in there. The hook's delicious. & the harpsichord - sweet.

Never seen or heard the Margaret Mandolph demo of 'Popsicles and Icicles', I only read that David Gates had her sing it. Which has me wondering and believing that there is a good possibility there were more Gates produced Margaret Mandolph tracks recorded beside the A & B sides of her two Planetary singles.

As a big time Gates collector myself I must add that I've always loved this track, but I'm curious as to your comment that MM also cut the Popsicles demo ! Do you have that as well ?!!!

How can you not like a record with a harpsichord backing like this? You can throw away all the the instruments and you'd still have a great single!

Gates could always be counted on to do it up right-a bit of a Mary Wells/Dionne Warwick sound.

Thanks Anthony. If the Eddie Seay record is the one I have, you should dig it out and give it a listen. It is a storming soul stomp with the full on wrecking crew rumble. Listen Anthony, I really thank you for posting all these Gates 45s. The acetate, and others are magic. And Blue Lipstick had been on my want list for years, and I never thought I'd get to hear the damn thing, and it's awesome. So a big thanks for that too. Your channel rules!!!

This IS one very special record. Both of Miss Margaret's singles are way up there on my girly pop list.

Hi Chuck. I have a copy of a record by EDDIE SEAY on PPI someplace around here. That label was located here in L.A. and was probably an independent venture that David Gates and more than likely, a few of his musical acquaintances undertook. I think no more than two discs were issued on the label (#1000 & #1001).

Hey Anthony, you're site rules! Say, since you are an expert on all things wrecking crew, could you tell me about the ppi label? I have two things which are Gates related and wondered how many records are on the label and who owned it. Cheers, -Chuck
