Not a chance! Lennon was an over-rated walking ego. Newman far outshines him in talent and personality. He's a better songwriter and musician.

Harry Nillsson made an album of Newman songs, appropriately called "Nillsson Sings Newman." He was also best buddies with the Beatles during the Apple days and after the breakup, remained friends with John, where at one point they got drunk in L.A., crashed a Smothers Bro's. concert and recorded "Pussycats" together.
