People dislike Depp’s Wonka for being too strange or weird. But if you think about it based on the backstory given in the film, it would make sense that Wonka would be eccentric and out of touch with reality. Imagine isolating yourself from the rest of the world for an indefinite period of time. During this time you’re constantly coming up with new creative ideas without any reality checks. And with an infinite number of resources at your disposal you’re able to put these ideas into action with relative ease. So when you’re finally forced outside into the real world, you don’t know how to act because you’re outside the security of your factory so you feel exposed and awkward.
