I live in Long Island and these girls (Pat Carty lead vocalist, the late Johnette Fitzgerald-Alexander, who sang the intro, Flornia Fitzgerald-Williams and Rutha Fitzgerald) were from our area and, when this record came out in 1971, you would have thought these girls were the biggest thing on the planet! People are still talking about this record! Pat Carty is still one of my close friends and I was so surprised when I went to college in Ohio and became the DJ on the radio to see how much the phones lit up when I played this song! They not only knew every word, they loved it and requested it again and again! They had an additional release which could have provided them with another hit ") but, unfortunately, they did not get the proper backing from their record company so they are solely known for this classic. Got a chance to talk to Jolanda Ayers-Cruz who took sang lead on the releases they had after this one ("A Woman Will Do Wrong" backed by "Dear Mother “ and “Let Me Go To The Disco”) and she said Pat gave her some tough shoes to fill! What a voice! Please read Abdul Hamin’s comments for a real behind-the-scenes look at how this song came to be recorded!

I don't want to bust anyone's bubble who claim "writing", being the "original" backup singers, or "producing" this fantastic song, but I will give you the Truth! Back in the day, in Freeport, I had a band. We played all the local events and clubs. Our girl associates (The Tolbert sisters) sang the female songs we couldn't easily do and another friend, Pat Carty, was an excellent singer at 15 years old, with a terrific range. We did music for fun and not fame right there on Rutland Rd, on my mother's back porch. A local producer who lived in the neighborhood heard us play with our young talented lead singer (Pat) and promised us a record deal. Unexcited, we accepted working in his studio in Freeport on Jay St.. This was HIS song, HE wrote and I ARRANGED it especially for Pat, our lead singer. A local "friend" who also played music, and wanted to join our group, but I said NO, persuaded our lead singer to come to his father's studio and sing for him. Being a teenager, not knowing scruples and LAW, she did so. They put some other backup singers with her, added some studio band and produced the record behind our backs. The record came out unbeknowing to us, without any of our permission, and it became a hit. They IMITATED us to the hilt. Every note, every nuance and every breath was what we created. They STOLE EVERYTHING WE DID. We never got credit for our work, our music, and they tried to appease me by putting my name on the label (Gilliam) and none of us got a dime from the theft. The funny thing how God works is that shortly thereafter, someone "stole" it from the thieves who stole it from us, and reproduced it. You can hear all the versions of the theft on You Tube. In the end, NOBODY got paid, and I mean NOBODY. ALL of the original group are still around and we keep contact on Facebook. Everything I said can be verified by any of the ORIGINAL musicians, singers and me the guitarist/arranger who are alive and well with no remorse or anger at anyone. Afterall, we were youth and all we wanted to do was perform and have fun, and that we did. I forgave Pat in my heart and have moved on. I'm sure those who participated in the "theft" did not know that it was a stolen song and arrangement. So, I have no beef with them either and allow them to think whatever they want to think.

It's okay, It is not your fault . :) You can only know what you were informed of ... but they just are not accurate... It's just that the people that know us as the original group , and the song, the recording are all from Hempstead and went to school with us and heard us while we were working on this a lot of times 1970 until we graduated.... .. just wanted the public to know the facts that's all. Take care and God Bless You All p.s. I understand .... it's okay :)
