I grew up a sheltered, very poor kid in central West Virginia. Upon moving to North Carolina as a child and having cable for the first time, this video was the first exposure I ever had to the imagery of love between two people of different races.I wasn't sure what the video was about when I was that young...the burning crosses were very confusing and scary to me. When Madonna kisses the black man's feet, my father got enraged and wouldn't let me watch the video. He yelled about her being a whore and a "nigger lover". I couldn't understand why he had such a problem with black people.....look how loving and accepting they all are as they're singing and rejoicing for the same god that my father claimed to love.Some of the imagery from this video stayed in my mind, and despite being a mostly grunge and progressive rock fan through my teen and adult years, this has always been a song I've enjoyed.I decided to watch this video again after nearly 25 years, finally able to understand what the video was actually about, and I couldn't help but to tear up and weep through it.So, thank you Madonna for helping to inspire my racial love and acceptance.
