Doffers were "mostly girls", says Maddy in this interview. I often hear or read the assumption that they were all girls and that this is a song purely about women's work.Sorry, but it's not true. Doffers could be both boys and girls, but in fact, more often boys than girls, look it up in the industrial history of the time.Anyway, nicely sung, but for me with too much instrumentation, This is a simple and sweet song that can get swamped by all the instrumental flummery.
