Personally, I loved the Split and Lovelife album. I was just listening to both the other day while riding my bike, along with Topolino and other single from 1996. I actually quite enjoy them. I love Gala and Spooky as well, but like the direction they went in after those albums. I was a good evolution for the band I thought. They really grew as song writers. Just my opinion.

I think focusing on the poppier stuff would have been a mistake. This song is the dream pop that they do best. I was bummed when they started doing more pop as opposed to the lush, dreamy sound they were known for.

We aren't going to forget Lush. Ever. This song, and the entire album Split, mark the highpoint of their genius. There hasn't been anything like this in the decade since. I so miss Lush.

@RegularSean91 Lush albums are far more consistent than My Bloody Valentine albums. Plus, I'd hope the mixing and production would be spectacular on Loveless, since it cost roughly $250,000, which almost bankrupted their label, and took over two years to make,

@deussolinvictus, it all comes down to the production. listen to the guitar in 'soon' and tell me what lush guitar riff even comes close to that. lush is a great band, but it's hard to find any album, let alone a shoegaze one, that has mixing and production as good as loveless has.

Late reply, but I (retroactively, of course) never understood the absolute fascination with My Bloody Valentine when Lush could demonstrate equal or better technical prowess with great songwriting. The U.S. can be weird in what contemporary hipsters choose to embrace.

I agree with you on that comment 110%. Split is my favorite album by them. I love how it was so experimental in terms of song writing and some of the songs are just so beautiful such as "Lit Up" and "Lovelife." And I've always thought those song should have been singles. Especially, "Lovelife." It is one of my favorite songs by Lush, but this song is still two thumbs way up.

This is a great song but I'm still puzzled why it was released as a single. In fact, all the single choices off "Split" seemed strange to me when there were more accessible songs like "Lit Up" and "Lovelife" that would have done much better, at least in the U.S. As I recall, "Split" was met with disdain by critics at the time, which I still do not understand.

Actually this came out in 1994 at the same time as the Hypocrite EP and it always amazes me when given a choice to vote between these two tracks on radio chart shows, most people always chose Hypocrite over this gem.
