During his reign, there was two periods. At the beginning, to summerize, he was rather frivolous and opposed devotees. But, roughly around the 1680's, under the influence of his last paramour Madame de Maintenon, and to calm religious tensions (catholics vs protestants and jansenists), he changed his politics and supported that devotees. The song's lyrics encourage the king to dissociate himself from them. Contextually, Lully was disliked by this "party" because opera was considered immoral.
