Luciano Pavarotti (1935-2007) Born and died in Modena, Italy, Pavarotti was an Italian tenor who was known for his seemingly effortless high Cs during the early stage of his career.

Renata Scotto (b.1934) is an Italian soprano widely admired for both her musical and dramatic gifts. Since retiring from the stage as a singer in 2002, she has turned to directing opera as well as teaching at her own opera academy in Italy and New York.

Here Pavarotti and Scotto sing the duet 'Un di, felice, eterea' from a live performance of Verdi's La traviata. This was on 19 March 1965 at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London.

Did any tenor ever sing such pure vowels, such precise pitches, such an untrammeled sense of the long line? Despite the carping of critics probably resentful of someone (so obviously a "male" someone) capable of generating warmth, generosity, and true humanity, Pavarotti was a great MUSICIAN (and I know he could not actually "read" music).

The San Francisco performance and subsequent "story" was broadcast on nationwide TV for all of us to enjoy. Scotto was a very fine artist which in the latter part of her career undertook roles her voice was not suited for, Gioconda being one of them. But the "story" had much to do with curtain calls, not singing.....
